Better climate data can keep wind and solar forecasts honest
What happened
A peer-reviewed review finds that renewable-energy yield estimates are sensitive to dataset choice, time resolution, local validation, and treatment of uncertainty. The reviewed evidence indicates that daily rather than hourly wind data can underestimate potential by 5% to 15%, while one 139-farm United States dataset found actual median-probability output averaging 7% below preconstruction estimates.
Why it matters
Energy-yield forecasts shape project siting, financing, grid planning, and public trust. Long-duration, high-frequency, locally checked data can reduce both inflated expectations and the risk of overlooking sound projects, but individual error estimates should not be generalized beyond their original contexts.
What to watch
- Greater use of at least 20 years of data, hourly resolution, local measurements, and multiple climate datasets.
- Transparent P50 and P90 uncertainty reporting in project finance and permitting.
- Post-construction audits comparing forecast output with actual generation over multiple years.
