Flexible data-center loads cut modeled grid costs, not always emissions
What happened
An iScience study modeled flexible data-center demand in Texas, the Mid-Atlantic, and the Western Interconnection, finding power-system cost reductions of up to 5, 4, and 2 percent, respectively. Emissions depended on which generators answered the shifted load: flexibility cut modeled emissions by as much as 40 percent in a high-renewables Texas case but increased them by as much as 3 percent in a Mid-Atlantic case where coal generation responded; this is modeling, not an operating trial.
Why it matters
Demand flexibility can help grids absorb large new loads and avoid some costs, but lower electricity prices do not automatically mean lower climate pollution. Clean supply, transparent operating rules, and emissions-aware scheduling need to be designed together.
What to watch
- Field trials that disclose when loads move, which generators respond, and the resulting hourly emissions.
- Utility tariffs and interconnection agreements that reward flexibility without prolonging coal or gas generation.
