Renewables are set to overtake coal as electricity demand accelerates

The International Energy Agency's Electricity Mid-Year Update 2026 projects global electricity demand growth of 3.6% in 2026 and 3.8% in 2027, driven by industry, air conditioning, electric vehicles, and data centers. The IEA says renewables are on track to overtake coal as the world's largest source of electricity in 2026, with solar generation alone growing by roughly 600 terawatt-hours that year. These are forecasts rather than guarantees; grid buildout, storage, fuel markets, and weather will shape the outcome.
