India study finds humid monsoon heat is becoming harder to escape

What happened

An analysis of 1979-2021 conditions estimates that uncompensable heat stress affected about 9% of India's population during observed summer and monsoon periods. The affected area grew from roughly 10,000 square kilometers in the 1980s to about 40,000 by 2020.

Why it matters

Humid heat can prevent sweat from cooling the body even when temperatures are below familiar dry-heat records. Monsoon timing also complicates preparedness because cloud and rain do not always bring enough nighttime or physiological relief.
