Ireland's grid set a battery discharge record as renewables supplied 41%

What happened

EirGrid's provisional system data indicate that renewable sources supplied about 41 percent of Ireland's electricity in November 2025. Wind provided 35 percent, or 1,067 gigawatt-hours, while batteries reached a then-record 362 megawatts of discharge at one point on November 25. The battery record followed a November 14 market-system update that allowed registered energy-storage power stations to participate more directly in real-time balancing.

Why it matters

A power system with more variable wind and solar needs fast, flexible resources to balance supply and demand. Ireland's result offers an operating-system example of batteries taking on a larger balancing role, but the 362-megawatt figure is an instantaneous power record rather than the amount of energy delivered over the day.
