New crop models bring 19 overlooked African crops into climate-adaptation planning

What happened

Researchers built process-based climate-crop model applications for 24 crops across the African food basket, including 19 underrepresented 'opportunity' crops, to support the Vision for Adapted Crops and Soils programme. They calibrated crop parameters with field observations and literature and evaluated outputs against national crop statistics and reported heat and drought events. The model reproduced broad yield and land-use patterns and provides a scalable first-pass research framework. It is not a field deployment or a continent-wide yield forecast: aggregate agreement was moderate, observational data remain sparse, and the model does not fully represent nutrients, pests, diseases, or many local management practices.

Why it matters

Adaptation analysis is more useful when it includes locally important and culturally rooted crops rather than only globally dominant staples. Better representation can help researchers, farmers, and public institutions test planting, breeding, and investment options under heat and drought, provided model results are paired with local field evidence, farmer knowledge, nutrition needs, markets, and land rights.

  • Open local and subnational crop datasets and field trials across Africa's diverse agroecological zones.
  • Farmer-led validation of crop choices, planting dates, management options, seed access, cultural preferences, and market conditions.
  • Model improvements for soil fertility, nutrient limits, pests, diseases, irrigation, and locally specific farming practices.
  • Whether the framework changes real decisions and improves food security, nutrition, biodiversity, and resilience without imposing one crop strategy everywhere.
