Climate Impacts Global maize-growing regions

Several regional droughts could combine into a global breadbasket shock

What happened

Across six large climate-model ensembles, a peer-reviewed study estimated a 52 percent chance under SSP2-4.5 and a 60 percent chance under SSP5-8.5 of at least one record-shattering drought across major global maize regions during 2026–2099. Most modeled global events arose when several regions experienced moderately extreme drought at the same time.

Why it matters

Food systems can face global stress even when no single producing region sets its own drought record. These are wide-ranging model probabilities for soil-moisture area—not a forecast for a particular year, a direct crop-yield estimate, or certainty that the event will occur.

What to watch

  • Crop-model studies that translate simultaneous soil-moisture drought into yield, price, and nutrition risks.
  • Whether irrigation, crop diversity, storage, trade buffers, and emissions cuts reduce the modeled systemic risk.
