Western Australia selects 1.9 GW of renewables and 3.7 GWh of storage

What happened

Australia's Capacity Investment Scheme selected ten Western Australian wind, solar, and battery projects totaling 1.886 gigawatts of renewable generation and 3.683 gigawatt-hours of standalone storage. The federal government projects that the portfolio could supply more than one million households, support peak demand for more than 400,000 households for up to four hours, and support more than 7,000 construction jobs. These are tender selections subject to final contracts, not operating projects, and the household and job figures are government projections.

Why it matters

A coordinated portfolio can combine variable renewable generation with long-duration batteries, reliability, local jobs, community benefits, and First Nations participation instead of treating each need separately. The climate and consumer value will become measurable only as contracts close, projects are built, and performance is verified.

What to watch

  • Final contracts, financing, permitting, grid connections, construction starts, and commissioning dates for all ten selected projects.
  • Whether community-benefit, First Nations participation, local-material, reliability, cost, and job commitments are independently tracked and delivered.
