France prepares for a fourth heatwave as forecasts signal prolonged extremes
What happened
Le Monde reported that weather models point to France's fourth heatwave of 2026 beginning around July 29, although its exact intensity and duration remain uncertain. Forecasts indicated 34 to 38 degrees Celsius across many areas by Wednesday, with some medium-range models showing temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius later in the week. France had already experienced 30 heatwave days this summer, and two-thirds of the country's 53 recorded heatwaves have occurred since 2000.
Why it matters
Repeated heatwaves leave less time for people, hospitals, workplaces, transport systems, rivers, and soils to recover between events. Preparedness must address hot nights, indoor overheating, worker exposure, cooling access, water demand, and fire risk rather than treating each alert as an isolated episode.
What to watch
- Meteo-France alerts and whether the highest-temperature scenarios persist as the forecast window narrows.
- Nighttime temperatures, hospital demand, school and workplace protections, and access to public cooling.
- Further drought, low river flows, and wildfire danger if the heat persists into early August.
Sources & evidence
- France will face fourth heatwave of the year starting next weekLe Monde report published July 25, 2026, on the forecast heatwave, recent French heat records, drought, and adaptation pressure.
