Mauritius offers households support for rooftop solar
What happened
Mauritius launched a Household Rooftop Solar PV Scheme that will cover 25% of an eligible system's cost, up to Rs75,000. The program was launched July 25 at the Central Electricity Board station in Curepipe and announced by the Government Information Service on July 27. Officials paired the incentive with national energy-efficiency awareness efforts and described lower household electricity costs as a central goal.
Why it matters
Small island power systems face imported-fuel costs, limited land, and climate exposure. Well-designed rooftop solar can use existing buildings, diversify supply, and reduce household bills, but access, installation quality, grid integration, and long-term service will determine whether benefits are broad and durable.
