Groundwater pumping can dry California headwater streams weeks early

What happened

Researchers modeled 580 pumping scenarios in two northern California watersheds and found that realistic agricultural groundwater demand can stop seasonal streams up to five weeks earlier and, in some cases, dry streams that normally flow year-round. The effects were strongest in dry years and catchments with limited underground storage.

Why it matters

Groundwater and streams are often connected parts of one system. Pumping can be most damaging when drought and heat raise irrigation demand just as salmon habitat and downstream water supplies are under greatest stress, making the timing and location of withdrawals as important as total volume.
