Study shows clean power's emissions value depends on timing and location

What happened

University of Colorado Boulder researchers report that an identical megawatt-hour of wind or solar can deliver very different environmental benefits depending on which generator it displaces. Their analysis links higher value to locations and hours where renewable output pushes coal or other polluting plants offline, while additions can provide less incremental emissions benefit when they mainly curtail existing clean generation.

Why it matters

Renewable electricity remains central to decarbonization, but project siting, transmission, storage, and hourly operation determine how much fossil generation is actually avoided. Better marginal-emissions data could help incentives reward projects that produce the greatest climate and public-health gains.
