Cheddar maker uses heat recovery to cut dairy energy use

What happened

Barber's Farmhouse Cheesemakers says heat-recovery systems now operating at three of its seven milking parlors capture heat from milk cooling and reuse it for hot water. The company and project vendor report about 70,000 pounds in annual savings, electricity use cut roughly in half, and almost 66 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions avoided each year.

Dairies need cooling and hot water at the same time, making waste-heat recovery a practical efficiency opportunity. The system has operated since 2024, but the performance figures are site- and vendor-reported rather than independently measured, so they should not be generalized to every dairy.
