July ocean heat set a record as western Europe had its hottest early summer seas

What happened

Copernicus reports that July 2026 tied July 2024 as the second-warmest July globally in the ERA5 record. Sea-surface temperatures outside the polar regions averaged 20.96 degrees Celsius, the highest July value recorded, while western Europe had its warmest combined June-July sea-surface temperature at 21.62 degrees Celsius.

Why it matters

Warm oceans can intensify marine heat stress, raise coastal temperatures, and influence weather and fisheries. The monthly global air-temperature estimate was about 1.47 degrees Celsius above the 1850-1900 level, but a single month near 1.5 degrees does not mean the Paris Agreement's long-term temperature threshold has been crossed.
