AI could raise fossil-fuel output unless clean-energy gains advance faster

What happened

A peer-reviewed modeling study estimates that parallel AI-driven productivity gains in fossil-fuel extraction and renewable energy could add roughly 0.47 to 1.8 gigatons of carbon dioxide per year. In the modeled comparisons, renewable-energy productivity gains had to be about four to five times larger than fossil gains to offset the added emissions.

Why it matters

AI's climate effect depends on more than data-center electricity use: it can change how quickly energy resources are discovered, developed, and operated. This is a comparative model, not an emissions inventory or a prediction that the estimated increase will occur.
