Solar reviews find photovoltaic power central to most 2050 electricity pathways
What happened
A new synthesis of 60 peer-reviewed energy-system studies found that most modeled pathways combine solar and wind for 80% to 99% of electricity by 2050. Solar's modeled share varied widely, from 5% to 98%, while the authors' cross-study synthesis placed it near 61%.
Why it matters
The review shows that solar is no longer treated as a marginal technology in most long-range electricity studies. It does not predict one inevitable 2050 mix: model assumptions, transmission, storage, demand, policy, and how technologies are represented all shape the results.
