AMOC model finds the pace of forcing can matter as much as the warming level

What happened

In one climate-model setup, the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation tracked a stable state to roughly 5.5 degrees Celsius of warming when carbon dioxide rose slowly, but collapsed near 2 degrees under faster forcing. The researchers describe the result as rate-induced tipping.

Why it matters

The experiment suggests that the speed of climate forcing can affect whether a major ocean circulation crosses a threshold, not only the final temperature. It does not predict that the real AMOC will collapse at 2 degrees or provide a collapse date.
