UK lawmakers underestimated climate-policy support by 11 points on average
What happened
In a survey experiment with 100 sitting UK members of Parliament, lawmakers underestimated public support for four climate policies by an average of 11 percentage points and overestimated division between voter groups. Showing polling evidence produced only limited and uncertain correction in the study.
Why it matters
Policy can stall when elected officials think voters are less supportive or more polarized than they are. This study identifies a potentially addressable information gap, but it measures one national legislature and does not prove that correcting perceptions will change votes or policy outcomes.
What to watch
- Replication with larger samples, other legislatures, and additional policy designs.
- Whether trusted, repeated constituent evidence changes lawmakers' public advocacy or voting behavior.
- How support shifts when costs, distributional effects, and implementation details become concrete.
