Food & Nature Vanuatu
Heat, drought, and floods are squeezing a key Vanuatu food region
What happened
SPREP reported that farmers in Eratap and Teouma, important fresh-produce areas for Port Vila, are facing overlapping heat, drought, and flood pressures. Residents described crop losses during severe heat and drought, while floods can erase riverside gardens and leave less time to recover before the next shock.
Why it matters
Food resilience depends on more than average rainfall. Crop choice, soil moisture, water access, riverbank exposure, transport, and the timing of repeated events all shape whether local production can recover. Community observations are valuable evidence, but they do not make every future seasonal outcome certain.
What to watch
- Rainfall, soil moisture, river conditions, and local food prices during the current El Nino period.
- Support for heat-tolerant crops, water storage, agroforestry, erosion control, and safer garden locations.
- Whether adaptation funding reaches farmers and reflects their local knowledge.
