What happened

A new UN Environment Programme report says global warming is likely to cross 1.5 C within the next few years. In its most optimistic assessed scenario, warming peaks at 1.8 C above preindustrial levels; other scenarios peak above 2 C. UNEP says immediate, sustained cuts to carbon dioxide and methane, paired with adaptation, can still limit how high temperatures rise and how long they remain above 1.5 C.

UNEP says carbon dioxide removal would have to supplement, not replace, deep emissions cuts. Returning below 1.5 C would not undo every loss incurred during an overshoot.
