El Niño can turn solar variability into a grid-planning problem

Four decades of reanalysis found sustained solar-potential deficits during strong El Niño events in several fast-growing photovoltaic regions. Storage, transmission, demand response, and cleaner firm capacity can reduce the grid risk created when season-scale weather patterns affect several regions together.

Why it matters

Renewable planning must account for more than daily variability as solar's share of electricity grows. The study examined only three canonical super El Niños and used monthly ERA5 solar potential rather than measured plant output; its future emissions estimates depend on assumed photovoltaic growth and backup generation.
