Retired fossil infrastructure could become a source of clean-energy metals
What happened
A peer-reviewed global material-stock and lifecycle study estimated that fossil-fuel infrastructure contains about 1.34 billion metric tons of steel and 10.03 million metric tons of copper. Those modeled stocks equal roughly 145 percent of median projected transition steel demand and 32 percent of median copper demand for 2020–2050.
Why it matters
A well-managed fossil-asset phaseout could turn decommissioned equipment into a material source for wind, solar, and grids while reducing some new mining and primary production. The figures describe modeled potential, not proof that the materials are accessible, recovered at scale, or already entering clean-energy supply chains.
What to watch
- Decommissioning schedules, verified material inventories, recovery yields, contamination, and scrap quality.
- Policies and traceability systems that direct recovered metals into clean-energy manufacturing without displacing other valuable recycling uses.
