Water efficiency can help economies grow without matching increases in use

What happened

A Nature Water Perspective argues that economic growth need not require water withdrawals and consumption to rise at the same rate. The authors distinguish relative decoupling, in which water use grows more slowly than the economy, from absolute decoupling, in which water use falls while economic output grows, and point to efficiency, reuse, loss reduction, changes in production, and governance as important pathways. This is a policy synthesis, not a new global measurement showing that decoupling has already occurred everywhere.

Why it matters

Water scarcity is not only a question of how much water exists; it is also shaped by how efficiently cities, farms, and industries use and reuse it. Well-designed conservation and infrastructure can support human development while reducing pressure on rivers, aquifers, and climate-vulnerable communities.
