Seasonal heat forecasts could give wildlife conservation an early warning
What happened
Researchers combined NASA seasonal forecasts with species-specific historical temperature limits for 30,585 land vertebrates. In a May 2024 retrospective test, the system flagged heat exposure for more than 3,500 species, including over 1,250 of conservation concern, typically one to two months ahead and in some regions three to five months ahead.
Why it matters
Earlier warning could help conservation teams target monitoring, water, habitat access, rescue capacity, and public alerts before extreme heat peaks. The system predicts thermal exposure rather than mortality, and species ranges, thresholds, and seasonal forecasts all carry uncertainty.

- Prospective validation against observed heat events, species responses, and documented conservation outcomes.
- Operational adoption by wildlife agencies and whether lead time supports practical, locally appropriate interventions.
