What happened

Researchers analyzed 5,990 national time series covering 130 technologies in 228 countries and found that smaller, simpler, more standardized, less material-intensive, and shorter-lived technologies generally diffuse faster.

Why it matters

The result offers a design and policy clue for climate solutions: modular products and systems may scale more quickly, though speed also depends on institutions, finance, infrastructure, and local demand.
