UNEP expands satellite methane alerts to speed leak repairs
What happened
The UN Environment Programme said its satellite-based Methane Alert and Response System had issued more than 5,000 alerts across 33 countries, helping governments and companies identify very large methane leaks quickly enough to act.
Why it matters
The system is a practical climate tool because cutting methane can slow near-term warming, but UNEP also reported that follow-through remains uneven and is seeking an 80 percent response rate by 2030.
