Travel-demand forecasts sharpen future city CO2 maps
What happened
A new framework uses purpose-based origin-destination travel forecasts and building floor-area data to allocate future non-industrial CO2 emissions among municipalities. The building-based indicators correlated more strongly with changes in energy use than static land-cover indicators and reproduced observed floor-area patterns with high model fit.
Why it matters
National emissions scenarios are too coarse for many local decisions. More realistic municipal maps can help cities test where building efficiency, transit, land-use, and public-facility investments could make the largest difference.

- Whether municipal inventories and open data are sufficient to validate future projections.
