EPA checklist helps states identify drinking-water risks before systems fail
What happened
A new EPA checklist helps state drinking-water agencies identify, document, and resolve systemic problems during sanitary surveys. Examples include source water nearing capacity, malfunctioning treatment equipment, and recurring water-main breaks.
Why it matters
Water-system failures can disrupt service and threaten public health, especially during heat, drought, flooding, or power interruptions. The checklist creates an earlier warning step within existing oversight, but it is voluntary guidance rather than a new federal mandate.
What to watch
- Which state primacy agencies adopt the checklist and how consistently they document systemic risks.
- Whether systems identified through surveys receive technical assistance and affordable infrastructure funding.
- Evidence that early intervention reduces service failures, contamination risks, or emergency repairs.
