Study finds 2022-like heat mortality far more likely in Southern Europe

What happened

A peer-reviewed Nature Health study combined extreme-event attribution with epidemiological models across 34 European countries. It found that, in Southern Europe, heat-related mortality events like those modeled for 2022 were on average 26.5 times more likely than under a pre-industrial climate, roughly ten times the European average. The study also found nonlinear increases as warming rises and large regional and demographic differences.
