Palau launches climate and ocean information tools for local preparedness
What happened
Palau launched an Ocean Portal and the Kukau Climate Early Warning Dashboard through a UNEP-supported programme. The Ocean Portal combines coral-reef, fisheries, tourism, coastal-community, and infrastructure information, while the Kukau dashboard provides farmers with forecasts, crop warnings, traditional knowledge, and community resources. UNEP reports that 200 Red Cross Disaster Action Team members have been trained across all 16 states and a regional wave model provides 14-day hourly forecasts.

UNEP reports platform features, training counts, and a community account of evacuation support during a July 2025 tsunami watch. It does not provide an independent evaluation of forecast accuracy, reach, sustained use, or avoided losses.
Why it matters
Climate and ocean data improve resilience only when people can reach, understand, and act on them. Linking information systems with farmer knowledge, community training, and disaster response is a concrete attempt to move from monitoring to local decisions.
