One ocean-pattern bias could narrow tropical rain-belt projections

What happened

Across 542 CMIP6 historical simulations from more than 50 models, the modeled Northern Hemisphere ocean generally warmed relative to the Southern Hemisphere while the observed interhemispheric trend moved in the opposite direction. The study links this specific mismatch partly to an overly strong modeled greenhouse response in the regional sea-surface-temperature pattern.

Why it matters

Correcting a regional pattern bias could improve tropical rainfall-risk projections and narrow estimates of aerosol forcing. The finding does not overturn measured global warming or the conclusion that human influence caused it; it concerns one hemispheric ocean contrast and its coupled feedbacks.
