Cutting emissions prevents worse marine heat, but enclosed seas still need adaptation

What happened

A peer-reviewed modeling study of 19 enclosed and marginal seas found that holding global warming below 2 degrees Celsius prevents the most extreme outcomes, but does not eliminate marine heat risk. In the mitigated scenario, 13 seas still warm by more than 1 degree Celsius above preindustrial levels and more than 60 percent of the combined sea area reaches near-permanent marine-heatwave conditions by mid-century.

Why it matters

Emissions cuts still make a decisive difference by avoiding still-worse heat, while the remaining risk means coastal communities also need habitat restoration, fisheries planning, conservation, and other adaptation.
