What happened

NOAA's Climate Prediction Center said the coupled ocean-atmosphere system now reflects a strengthening El Nino, with high confidence it will continue into early 2027 and an 81 percent chance it becomes very strong during October through December.

Why it matters

The practical message is preparedness: a strong El Nino can tilt seasonal odds for heat, drought, heavy rain, agriculture stress, wildfire risk, and public-health planning across many regions, even though local impacts still vary.
