Australia advances a $1.3 billion solar-and-storage project
What happened
Ark Energy said it reached a financial investment decision for the AUD 1.3 billion Richmond Valley Solar Farm and Battery Energy Storage System in northern New South Wales. The priority stage combines 200 MW AC of solar with a lithium-iron-phosphate battery rated at up to 275 MW and 2,200 MWh. The developer expects more than 850 direct and indirect jobs at peak construction, but financial close remains targeted for September and operations for January 2029, so the project is financed development rather than completed capacity.
Why it matters
Long-duration storage can shift solar output into higher-demand hours and support a transmission system with more variable generation. The project also offers a test of whether large clean-energy investments can deliver durable local benefits and protect habitat connectivity.
