Wave-energy converter earns first DNV prototype certificate

What happened

Energy Global reported on July 24 that CorPower Ocean received what the company and DNV describe as the first DNV prototype certificate for a wave energy converter. The independent review covered the C4 device under DNV's wave-energy certification standard, with the developer arguing that the milestone can reduce technology risk for insurers and project finance. Certification is an important engineering checkpoint, but it does not by itself establish commercial cost competitiveness, large-fleet reliability, or environmental performance.

Why it matters

Wave energy could complement wind and solar in coastal power systems because its production profile follows a different resource. Third-party certification can help emerging hardware move from demonstrations toward insurable, financeable projects, while keeping safety and reliability claims testable.
