Delaware battery study projects nearly $1 billion in 10-year value

What happened

A Delaware battery-storage assessment estimates close to $1 billion in energy savings over 2027 through 2036, the Cape Gazette reported. Prepared by Gabel Associates in response to a 2025 state resolution, the study examined household-scale and larger front-of-meter batteries. It estimated $166 million in utility savings, including $150 million for Delmarva Power & Light, while stressing that results depend on procurement, rates, interconnection, safety, recycling, and equity protections.

Why it matters

Batteries can shift solar generation into higher-demand hours, reduce peak costs, support reliability, and help communities use more local clean power. A projected benefit is not automatic, however; program design determines who pays, who saves, where systems are located, and how fire safety, supply chains, and end-of-life materials are managed.
