Continuous monitoring finds landfill methane estimates can miss major peaks

What happened

A Columbia University-led study used a monitoring tower to measure methane continuously near a New Jersey landfill for two and a half years. Researchers found that 2023 emissions at the site were about five times a previous estimate and varied strongly with season and air pressure, with early-winter peaks that short sampling campaigns could miss.

Why it matters

Methane traps far more heat than carbon dioxide over the short term, and landfills are a significant controllable source. Continuous measurements can reveal when collection systems underperform and give operators better information for maintenance, capture, and transparent reporting.
