Observation mission underway — results and forecast effects are not yet available
NOAA sends four saildrones toward the central Pacific's Niño 3.4 region
What happened
NOAA's Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory says two pairs of uncrewed surface vehicles departed Honolulu on August 21 and August 31 for the Niño 3.4 region. The four saildrones carry instruments for upper-ocean currents, wind stress, air-sea heat exchange, sea-surface temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, carbon-dioxide flux, ocean acidification, and—on three vehicles—chlorophyll. NOAA describes a planned observation period of about four months.
ACC context
ACC distinguishes a deployed observation mission from completed research results. Better measurements can constrain models, but improvement in any particular forecast must be evaluated after the data are collected and assimilated.
Why it matters
Direct measurements in the central equatorial Pacific can help researchers understand how ocean fronts, heat, clouds, winds, currents, and carbon exchange evolve during El Niño. The mission is underway; it has not yet produced the promised data, demonstrated a forecast improvement, or quantified this event's carbon-cycle effect.
What to watch
- Mission progress, data completeness, instrument performance, and public release of quality-controlled observations.
- Whether assimilating the measurements improves numerical forecasts compared with forecasts that do not use them.
- Measured changes in air-sea carbon exchange and how the event evolves toward neutral or La Niña conditions.
