Everyday habits from Section 1 make waste easier to notice. Section 2 applies that attention to the home itself. A more efficient home can be more comfortable, cost less to operate, and require a smaller clean-power system in Section 3.

These are low-cost, renter-friendly actions. They create the observations and routines needed before larger upgrades.
Choose one light, charger, device, or power strip that can stay off when it is not needed.
Put rarely used entertainment or office devices on a power strip so shutting them down is easy.
Use full loads, cold water for normal washes, a clean lint filter, or partial air drying.
Try a modest thermostat, shade, curtain, or fan change without making the home uncomfortable.
Look at usage, fees, and seasonal patterns so the next decision starts with real information.

Household Systems: turn fixes into a repeatable plan.
This stage combines practical improvements with measurement. Renters can complete suitable tasks and document larger repair requests for an owner or building manager.
Weatherstrip a suitable door or window, or document the repair request if you rent.
Replace the most-used non-LED bulbs and use daylight or a simple turn-off routine.
Replace or clean filters and schedule appropriate heating, cooling, fan, or portable-unit maintenance.
Fix or report a leak and consider an efficient showerhead or faucet aerator where appropriate.
Compare monthly electricity and fuel use with the prior year and note weather or household changes.

Act on the highest-priority air-sealing, insulation, or duct recommendation with qualified help where needed.
Decide how heating, cooling, water heating, cooking, and drying can shift as equipment ages out.
Compare right-sizing, lifetime energy, repairability, rebates, and total cost before replacing equipment.
Track energy use and comfort after the work and record what actually improved.

Work on Stage 3Whole-home walk-through
Look at one room and one system at a time.
Do not turn the walk-through into a shopping list. Record what you see, distinguish a safe do-it-yourself fix from professional work, and rank the next action by comfort, cost, and likely value.
Check door edges, window gaps, attic hatches, exterior-wall outlets, and pipe or cable penetrations. Larger sealing and insulation work should respect ventilation, moisture, combustion, and local-code needs.
Note uneven rooms, filter condition, blocked vents, shade, controls, equipment age, noise, and service history. Comfort problems can reveal waste or repair needs.
Start with frequently used lighting and electronics that stay on or warm. Avoid replacing functioning equipment merely to chase a small theoretical gain.
Check leaks, shower flow, water-heater condition, laundry temperature, dryer airflow, and whether safe maintenance is overdue.
Upgrade planner
Choose upgrades by cost, comfort, timing, and impact.
The best plan combines actions that are useful now with larger work timed around audits, rebates, roof or envelope projects, and normal equipment replacement.

Renters and shared homes
You do not need to own the building to participate.
Lighting, plug control, laundry routines, shades, bill review, and approved weatherstripping can often be handled without building work.
Photograph drafts, leaks, broken controls, comfort problems, and equipment issues. Make specific repair requests instead of vague complaints.
Check utility efficiency programs, tenant protections, community energy programs, and owner incentives where available.
Do not block required ventilation, alter fuel-burning equipment, open electrical panels, or perform work that requires a qualified professional.
Close the loop
Measure the result before moving on.
Record the date and cost of each change, note comfort before and after, and compare similar billing periods when possible. Weather, occupancy, and new equipment can change a bill, so do not credit every difference to one upgrade. Section 3 should use the electricity that remains after these efficiency gains.
